Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. Melody blue spix macaw do best with well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning tricks. They also enjoy going to the playgrounds and parks, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches that can be a nuisance to those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
As with any species of animal, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed can expect to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to fly around and exercise.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is evident Lolita's health continues get worse. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and wish to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 and has been a major tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has deteriorated.
Since her captor doesn't need to reveal this information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a part in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. These plans were too late to save the whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
